Library Shelving Training

Welcome to shelving training with the Lincoln Public Library! We're so glad you want to join our volunteer team.

Important Information About Shelving

  • Your training is in three parts. Two are online, and can be completed in about an hour each. The last training is in person, and will be scheduled when you complete your online training.
  • Shelving is on a drop-in basis : come in when it works for you!
  • We recommend shelving volunteers plan on committing to at least 4 hours of shelving each month - that comes out to at least one 2-hour shift every other week. We'd love to see you more than that!
  • Shelvers who do not volunteer for several months may be dropped from our volunteer list and no longer be eligible to shelve. Please make sure you can commit to shelving twice a month for at least six months before starting your shelving training.

Teen Summer Shelvers will have different scheduling requirements. This program runs from June-August each year, with applications opening in April.

Training 1: Shelving with Dewey

Learn the secrets of the Dewey Decimal system, including why it's still popular in public libraries.

This training is viewed best on a computer, not a mobile device. Need a computer? Come into the library.

Training 2: Lincoln Public Library Shelving Overview

Learn the specifics about shelving in our library, including how the library is organized.

  • View the overview here. Heads up: there are five quiz questions built into the presentation!
  • Email us, letting us know that you've completed the overview and are ready to schedule your in person training.

Training 3: In-Person Training

Trainings are currently scheduled based on demand. They are typically during weekday afternoons, but may be scheduled on Saturdays as needed.

Find out where each collection lives in the library, ask questions, and get a chance to shelve your first cart of books.

  • In-person trainings are scheduled as needed.
  • Trainings have a limited capacity.
  • You will e-mailed a link to schedule your in-person shelving once you have completed the online trainings and any necessary paperwork.

Teen Summer Shelvers will have special in-person trainings scheduled. This program runs from June-August each year, with applications opening in April.
